With Christmas less than two weeks away, people all over the Tampa Bay area are out in droves attempting to complete their holiday shopping, enjoying the decorations put out by homes and businesses, and taking in the sights and sounds of the holidays done in our own unique Florida style. With all of the fun and good cheer, it’s easy to forget that the unexpected can still happen to you, and it’s important to be aware of the risks that come along with this time of year.
While you’re out and about preparing for the festivities remember:
- Be cautious when walking through parking lots with your children and/or parcels as drivers can be distracted by all the busyness and not see you until it’s too late. If possible, stay on the sidewalks or pedestrian walkways when going between your vehicle and various stores or parking garages.
- If you must leave purchased items in your vehicle, lock them in your trunk or have them hidden out of sight. Theft is a huge issue at this time of year, and leaving your packages out in the open is practically an invitation for someone to break into your car.
- If enjoying Christmas light displays, be on the lookout for distracted drivers, and make sure your own eyes stay focused on the road unless you have come to a stop. Even a few seconds of glancing away from the road can result in injuries or damages.
- Prepare for heavy traffic. Big trucks carrying Christmas goods far and wide, people coming to (or leaving) Florida to visit family and friends, and last-minute shoppers are all reasons that the roads could be congested over the next few weeks. Allow extra time to get to your destination to avoid speeding and resulting accidents.
