Following an accident, you want to get your life back to normal as quickly as possible. We understand that, and Sessums Law Group strives to make that happen for each of our clients. However, there are some simple things you can do to make sure your claim is processed sooner than later.
If you have been in a car accident and are in the midst of dealing with insurance companies and seemingly endless claims, consider these tips to speed things up and get you back on the road.
Don’t Delay
After an accident, it’s important to file any and all claims with your insurance company immediately. The sooner you get the claim(s) in their hands, the sooner they will be able to get the ball rolling on paying out and getting your medical and auto bills taken care of. If you delay, it not only drags the timeline out longer, but it can also cause complications with your claims (such as lost evidence or forgotten details) which means the claim will take even longer to process.
If the accident wasn’t your fault, you should still file with your insurance company. Oftentimes they will be quicker to respond, and if you have to pay a deductible, the at-fault driver’s insurance company will usually refund it.
Record-Keeping
When you have been in an accident, there will be a plethora of paperwork coming your way from your insurance company, the opposing driver’s insurance company, hospitals and/or doctors, auto repair shops, and more. It’s important to keep incredibly accurate records of all paperwork and dates involving your claim. Stay organized and make sure you keep copies of ALL papers, including evidence such as photos or statements.
A great way to make sure you stay on top of your claims process is to have a calendar set up with all important dates related to having evidence, papers, etc. turned in, and the dates when you should expect papers to arrive at your own door. For example, if you were told that a form would be sent to you within X amount of business days, go ahead and mark that date on your calendar. If it hasn’t arrived by that point, then give them a call. Don’t expect the insurance company to always do what they say…you are better off to be in charge of your own case.
Prompt Response
When filing insurance claims, it is vital that you are prompt in responding to calls from your insurance provider. If you get a phone call asking for information, evidence, etc., don’t wait around before you respond or send in the requested item(s). This will only continue to extend the time line, and that is frustrating for everyone involved. Instead, respond as quickly as possible when you get a phone call or a message. If something is requested of you, send it in at the first feasible opportunity. A great way to take care of these things quickly and efficiently is to go digital instead of through paper and “snail mail.” If your insurance company is set up with a website portal and/or app, you can often upload evidence photos, or scan in forms and send them over that way. It offers instantaneous results and will move the process along much more quickly!
